Setting Up for a Piano Recording Part 2
Setting Up for a Piano Recording Part 2
SETTING UP FOR A PIANO RECORDING PART 2
In part 2 of this series of piano recording articles, I will look at the setup of our piano recording sessions at our WKMT Studio.
To start with, we uncover and unlock the piano, as our studio piano is reserved for recording sessions only. The piano is then set-up appropriately for the session, for example, during a piano and vocal recording session the piano lid may need to be put on the half-stick, to control the volume of the piano in the room when the singer is performing, or in the case of a piano only recording; simply to change the tone of the piano. Once the piano lid setting is in place, the microphones are then placed. At our WKMT studio, we use a matched pair of Audix SCX25A microphones, which are well suited to acoustic instruments such as the piano. One mic is placed over the bass strings inside the piano and the other mic is placed over the treble strings, this setup captures the full frequency range of the instrument and provides a stereo image of the piano, which replicates the pianist’s listening perspective. In addition to this, we set up a stereo pair of microphones at a distance from piano to capture the ambient sound of the piano in the room, to do this we use the stereo pair of built in microphones in the Zoom H4N recorder. These two pairs of microphones can then be balanced during the post-production stage of the recording session, to provide a rich and full piano sound.

Late start with Music
Late start with Music
Late start with Music
At The London Piano Recording Studio, we have the opportunity to see all sorts of musicians coming to record at our premises. People of all level and ages. It is impressive to see how, doctors, lawyers and even housewives take the bold decision of taking up piano or vocal lessons and all of a sudden becoming fabulous singers and/or pianists. This reality made us ask ourselves the question about whether there is an age limit to starting learning music or not.
After witnessing so many success stories from our clients, we came to the conclusion that sometimes is actually better for musicians to start “late” rather than too early. There are thousands of cases of young students taking up piano lessons pushed by their parents who then drop their endeavours altogether. On the contrary, when somebody starts learning the piano at a later stage of his or her life, the story is completely different…
In general, people who start learning the instrument later in their lives, tend to be far more committed and even passionate about their artistic development. It very often happens they have postponed it for quite a long before actually making the big step of starting training. Summarizing, adult music students tend to be particularly efficient and when they come to record as fully rounded late starters, they actually show a big deal of expertise and control.
Amongst many late-start-with-music artists when can name:
John Ondrasik
Tuli Kupferberg
Al Jarreau
Leonard Cohen
Sheryl Crow
Susan Boyle
For some of them, their carriers took off as late as 48…
We decided to post this article inspired by a post at www.wkmt.co.uk “Is it late for me o start learning piano” If you believe you made a late start with music, it definitely worths reading it!

Juan Rezzuto starts sharing his piano ideas
Piano ideas by Juan Rezzuto
Piano ideas – Juan Rezzuto, director of WKMT, opens a window into his personal sphere. How? by starting his own website juanrezzuto.com
This website serves the double role of providing information about the progress Juan is making on his sought after project “Haydn Sonatas” and the Vicente Scaramuzza publications.
Most importantly this website relates to how a composer and pianist finds pleasure in teaching other people about the graces of sharing his passion for music.
Piano lessons for beginners, piano lessons in general, our piano teachers team, all these concepts are treated at WKMT’s main website. Juan’s website mainly talks about his personal experience recording and producing music which he shares with the intention of helping students and colleagues involved in similar activities.

Oblivion, Piazzolla – Trio espressivo
Oblivion, Piazzolla – Trio espressivo
Oblivion, Piazzolla – Trio espressivo
Working with the trio espressivo was just an alluring experience. They perform superlatively well, but that is not surprising. This trio is made up of three astonishing musicians from the Eastern Bloc.
Making this recording was a challenge mainly because it was done within a very “wet” environment. In order to overcome the building’s acoustics issues, we used two couple of close up microphones combined with a global stereo take. In this way, we tried and put the situation on our side.
We then subjected the takes to some editing. We used the global take our “real” reverb. We worked on the levels, we compressed, we panned, we worked on the general envelope and Voila! The recording issues were resolved.
Enjoy the live recording of WKMT Classical Concert of 24.06.2017.
